A Problem That Needs To Be Fixed

Looks scary out there, I'll just stay in my trailer.

Of course there are numerous things I believe the army could fix or simply do better but there is one major problem that I believe that needs to be fixed right away. In the 30 or so months I have spent deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since February 2003 I have never heard a word out of anyone’s mouth in the army from the brigade level down about why we are fighting in Iraq. We receive numerous classes about how to behave while in country but nothing about why we are in country to begin with which leads me to believe our chain of command is not concerned about their soldiers having a clue why they are here or not. Whether or not this is the case is not what I am concerned with, it appears that way and since perceptions are a reality for a lot of soldiers I believe it needs to be addressed.

Let me get something straight before I continue though; I believe we have good reason to be in Iraq and I am content fighting for the reasons that put me here i.e. Saddam was dangerous, he expressed a want for nuclear weapons and whether or not he had them he was actively seeking them, he used WMD’s against his own people before, he violated UN sanctions etc. etc. yadda yadda yadda. The list goes on and on, and like I said is satisfactory for myself and a number of other soldiers, but I believe that most soldiers don’t have the slightest clue why they are really here. Whether this fault is completely their own or partly the fault of their chain of command is up for debate.

Why do I believe that most soldiers don’t have a clue why they are here you may be asking? Well I hear them talking about it all the time. “We are only here for the oil, to avenge Bush’s daddy, to try and take over the world” insert any loony reason you want into this sentence and they have probably said it. These beliefs are not only echoed by lower enlisted soldiers but I have also heard complete confusion or just plain wrong assumptions for our being here from senior enlisted NCOs and officers. These beliefs are not only unfounded on my fellow soldiers’ parts but also intellectually irresponsible and lazy on the part of their leaders. Leaders in the army have many responsibilities toward their soldiers and I believe one of those responsibilities is mentoring them on the why and not just then when and how.

To outline the problem more specifically I believe there is almost no understanding of why we are fighting in Iraq on the company level (i.e. each individual unit). We carry out our job day in and day out without ever hearing how we are affecting the war cause with our efforts. If we were only presented with the big picture once in awhile I think we would have more motivation to complete our job the best we are able to. I understand the job of most soldiers is to do rather than to question but I don’t believe that is an excuse to go about our jobs ignorant of the overall picture. If our leaders took the time to sit us down and talk to us about why we are in Iraq as often as they do about sexual harassment or finance we would have a much better understanding of why we are fighting.

I am willing to bet a large sum of money that most soldiers in WWII knew exactly what they were fighting for. They went to Europe and the Pacific with the knowledge that if they weren’t successful they would be facing the consequences of a Nazi dominated Europe on one side and a power hungry Japanese threat on the other. Of course it would be easier to fight a uniformed enemy like we did in WWII than to do what we are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan where everyone looks like an enemy, but this is precisely the reason why we need a better understanding of the big picture in order to stay motivated and keep up the fight.

I accuse myself of being guilty in the past of championing only the good of what is going on in Iraq. I have argued against polls that have come out stating that a majority of soldiers simply wish they could leave Iraq now and go home and I feel now that I would be wrong to do so again. While I do believe that if it came down to the brass tax most soldiers would agree that we should not cut and run right now I do not believe the majority of soldiers could give you a detailed description of why we are fighting in Iraq other than saying something like “we are doing it for the Iraqi people so they can be free.” Giving the Iraqi people a chance at freedom is a great and honorable thing but it is not the only reason why we are here.

This problem perplexes me and I wish I could do more about it. Of course I spend my time trying to educate fellow soldiers if they want to listen but I usually cannot get passed my first argument before someone calls me a Bush lover and asks me if I want to listen to some Toby Keith while drinking Coca Cola and eating apple pie. I liken the problem to the problem America has with poor voter turnout for elections. I do not believe everyone should vote since most people are misinformed or simply ignorant about which candidate to vote for and it is the same with soldiers and their opinions about the war. Most soldiers don’t take the time to watch the nightly news let alone read about what is going on outside their trailer. Most soldiers’ opinions don’t mean squat and shouldn’t because they don’t have a mind for anything other than their work. If a convoy to a base that needs fuel desperately to carry out helicopter missions in order to catch bad guys gets scratched due to bad circumstances so be it, more time for them to watch TV. If we only had a better idea of the consequences of our actions we wouldn’t feel this way. I don’t mean to make it sound like all soldiers could care less or don’t have brains but the reality is that some of them don’t.

So what do I believe we should do about the problem then? I think we should start training soldiers on all aspects of their deployment. If they are going to be stationed in Baghdad then we should explain to them what is going on in Baghdad and what our military leaders hope to see happen in the future. We should also explain to each unit how they figure into the plan for the future and give them constant updates about how what they are doing is affecting the outcome of the plan for the positive or the negative. This training should not be conducted individually by every unit but rather, by a team of army approved speakers that could travel around and/or compile power point slides, videos, and fact books to hand out for units to provide for their soldiers. This would probably be the only way the army would be able to control what information is being put out to soldiers and would mirror the way in which they disseminate information already so it wouldn’t be a big change.

We could also prepare soldiers at home station before they deploy by giving them a history of the region and the conflict we are in. By doing so false information and rumors would be stopped dead in their tracks before soldiers got into country and started talking to friends and family, and in some cases the media, and spreading the lies they hear from other soldiers.

All soldiers don’t have to believe in what they are fighting for but at the very least they should be educated about the reasons why their leadership has asked them to fight in a foreign land. With more education only comes more understanding and that is never a bad thing. Until the army takes this problem seriously I believe more soldiers will look back on their time in the desert as a good but unnecessary experience.

Tim, You have hit the nail on the head (again). After 20 yrs and one day, I recently retired as a senior NCO (E-8). Lack of knowledge/understanding of "the big picture" was rampant throughout my entire career. Part of this was the officer vs. enlisted elitism that is present in the Navy, but a larger part is that few people, if anyone, knew what the big picture was. The few times we were able to get the underlying fundamentals on why/what we were doing; it always made a huge difference. People would look for ways to help in achieving the end goals and make valuable contributions in getting there. Ultimately, I think that there are three major problems: 1. A lot of people just don't care. Call it the Nintendo attitude. You can give them all the information you can, you can't make them use it. Even when their lives literally are dependent upon it.
2. A lot of senior people that could be disseminating this information, just don't know it themselves. Whether that is their fault for not asking, or their superior's for not providing; only they know.
3. Even if the chain of command knew, and tried to inform the troops as to why they are where they are, the liberals and MSM (but I repeat myself) would eat them alive claiming political bias towards the President. Until JCS is willing to take this heat, nothing will happen internal to the military. A damn shame too, considering the fine personnel within it.
Keep safe, and don't lose focus as you get short!

Is there any way you can make sure that Rumsfield and the top brass read your blog every day (or at least once a week?)? Or are you already as a part of standard operating procedure sending them CC's on everything you write?

Bravo, Dude! I absoluted TRIED to get my son to learn something of the region and history before he deployed. Don't know if I got very far with that but I DO attempt to keep him informed of what's going on right under his nose and a bit of WHY. If for no other reason then to be more prepared for the total culture shock of how different things are there!
Anyhoo, good blog; I enjoy it. Thanks for your service!

Nice work Tim,

Joe from KC does make a good point. I think a lot of people would like to know what the mission is exactly right now.

Getting rid of Saddam was clear, but what is the overall plan for the military at this point?

In essesnce, how do you see victory being acheived in Iraq?

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your service.

You bring up good points. I've been assuming all of you were well versed on the big picture since your blog and several others are so well-grounded. I guess I was overly optimistic in this regard, but I'm still very impressed by the professionalism all of you display. Even the occasional slacker is not tarnishing your reputation.

I can see several reasons why you are not presented with the big picture by your superiors, but I think the reasons to present the information would override the reasons to not present the information.

At least you do have access to more current news and commentary than your predecessors did a few decades ago. Stars and Stripes and a few weekly magazines (that were often several days or weeks old) were our standard fare; that was a bad situation, for sure. I would have given anything to have the instantaneous access to global news you have today.

Thanks again for your service to our country, and for your blog. Best to you.

Hey Sgt,

Bravo(again). Right on target as usual.

If only the voices of you and those who share your perspective were heard by the people who most need to hear them. At least you have found a way to get your message out. And an important one it is.

You have taken your stand, and spoken your truth. Lesser souls cannot say that. I totally echo A&N's sentiments.

Maybe you and Buck will run on a ticket together in the future??

Never stop speaking your truth, Soldier. You will get that glory one day, of this I am confident.

This was an eye opening column. I had no idea they didn' inform you of why you are doing what you are doing. That seems like a no brainer. I would like to know the real reason why they don't say anything.

I think a lot of people here don't know why we are there! I thought the soldiers had more information. Something definitely needs fixing!

Where is Frank Capra when one needs him? What you're calling for reminds me very much of the ideas behind the 'Why We Fight' film series of WWII. It IS important to know the big picture. I appreciate your effort to put more pieces of the puzzle together for us.

That is a big question Praquetwin but I pretty much agree with what the administration has already layed out concerning victory in Iraq. I think victory will only come when the Iraqis themselves are able to secure their country by themselves. I also believe real victory will include getting rid of the corruption in the police force and government and those things will only come in time and as we all know never completely.

I also believe the militias need to be put down and dispersed as I can only see one army-Iraqi Army-controlling security.

Basically it is up to the Iraqis to step up to the plate and achieve victory for themselves as we can never give them everything. As far as what a victory would look like for America in Iraq I suppose staying the course until the Iraqis are able to do so. In other countries in other times we have done the same thing and it has taken quite awhile so I believe, as I have said before, it will take patience on everyone's part.

This answer might not be satisfactory but it is all I have now. I know things look rough and they are at times but I do believe progress is being made. I think everytime we kill an extremist progress is made. Progress cannot only be measured in big victories, we must remember the everyday small things as well.

I doubt Rumsfield reads my blog but I know some people at the Pentagon do and that is one of the main reasons I wrote this. I didn't write this blog just to vent but rather, so that people in the places that make decisions could read it and get a feel for how the soldiers are feeling about things. I only hope that my message got across to someone.

TFBrother- I couldn't tell you the real reason they don't tell us anything but I can tell you it isn't some big conspiracy. I agree with Joe in KC, a lot of people don't care, a lot of people just don't know, and some just don't care if they know or not.

Melinda you bring up a good point a good point about the Frank Capra, Why We Fight films. What a different era! Major Hollywood stars enlisted. David Niven comes to mind. He left his Hollywood career to become an oficer in the British Army and lead a Commando unit during D-Day!!

Never happen in today's Hollywood. What would John Wayne say? He must be spinning in his grave!

Wow. Do you and I live in a different America or what? I don't remember taking the survey concerning pulling out of Iraq. I also hadn't been hearing that the Dems were going to take back Congress in a landslide. I guess we believe and hear what we want. Was I the only one that didn't expect an entire nation of people that had lived under a dictator for decades to have the ability to live in a free society problem free. They have very little concept of freedom. Why do you think prisoners have a hard time adjusting to society after serving long sentences in prison? There is even a term for it. Institutionalization! Why would anyone expect anything different. Nations that were part of the former Soviet Union are still having trouble adjusting. BTW We have had a strong military presence in Korea since the 1950's We have been to war in Korea. North Korea is no Iraq. North Korea is a more difficult situation than Iraq ever was. Iraq wasn't tied to China like North Korea is. There has been a lot more going on in North Korea over the last 5 decades than what has ever been reported. We were able to go into Iraq easier than we can in North Korea. Don't fool yourself. The world is not as safe a place as you've been fooled into believing. The deception and hypocracy as you call it isn't exclusive to this administration. It's been going on in this country since 1776. A lot longer everywhere else.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. There absolutely was a clearly defined mission and goal. Remove Saddam Hussein from power because he was an imminent threat to the world's safety.

membrain said...

Right on Rakkvet! And just to add to the picture the fact that the war with North Korea is still on. There was a treaty signed to halt hostilities. In August of this year Kim Jung-Il, the star of "Team America: World Police" declared the truce null and void. So in his slightly altered mind the war is back on. Complicated? You bet.

In fact they are soooo stupid that you can't even tell them to F... off successfully..they don't get that either.

Margarita sounds like a scene from a sitcom. The lefty loony throwing a tantrum and everybody in the room watches her in silence til she runs down and then they take a drink, turn to each other and go on with their conversations.

Good coffee Joe. So what are you doing down on the south 40 today?

I love your blog and thank you for everything you are doing. It is worth it. I do hope those in the military and at the White House soon start doing a better job of getting the word out about the big picture, and what small steps are being accomplished. It is frustrating that they don't communicate better and deal with the media more often. I'm sure support for the war and support for President Bush would both skyrocket if there was simply more communication. Most people are too consumed by sports and American Idol to bother finding out for themselves what is going on around the world.

Thank you again for all you do. I'm behind you 100% and praying for all of you.

Well a lot of personnel over there psychologically tie it all in with 9/11. That terrible event that precipitated the whole "war on terror" deserves quite a bit more analysis on the part of most Americans.

One thing that struck me as odd in the days after 9/11 was Bush saying "We will not tolerate conspiracy theories [regarding 9/11]". Sure enough there have been some wacky conspiracy theories surrounding the events of that day. The most far-fetched and patently ridiculous one that I've ever heard goes like this: Nineteen hijackers who claimed to be devout Muslims but yet were so un-Muslim as to be getting drunk all the time, doing cocaine and frequenting strip clubs decided to hijack four airliners and fly them into buildings in the northeastern U.S., the area of the country that is the most thick with fighter bases. After leaving a Koran on a barstool at a strip bar after getting shitfaced drunk on the night before, then writing a suicide note/inspirational letter that sounded like it was written by someone with next to no knowledge of Islam, they went to bed and got up the next morning hung over and carried out their devious plan. Nevermind the fact that of the four "pilots" among them there was not a one that could handle a Cessna or a Piper Cub let alone fly a jumbo jet, and the one assigned the most difficult task of all, Hani Hanjour, was so laughably incompetent that he was the worst fake "pilot" of the bunch. Nevermind the fact that they received very rudimentary flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, making them more likely to have been C.I.A. assets than Islamic fundamentalist terrorists. So on to the airports. These "hijackers" somehow managed to board all four airliners with their tickets, yet not even ONE got his name on any of the flight manifests. So they hijack all four airliners and at this time passengers on United 93 start making a bunch of cell phone calls from 35,000 feet in the air to tell people what was going on. Nevermind the fact that cell phones wouldn't work very well above 4,000 feet, and wouldn't work at ALL above 8,000 feet. But the conspiracy theorists won't let that fact get in the way of a good fantasy. That is one of the little things you "aren't supposed to think about". Nevermind that one of the callers called his mom and said his first and last name, more like he was reading from a list than calling his own mom. Anyway, when these airliners each deviated from their flight plan and didn't respond to ground control, NORAD would any other time have followed standard operating procedure (and did NOT have to be told by F.A.A. that there were hijackings because they were watching the same events unfold on their own radar) which means fighter jets would be scrambled from the nearest base where they were available on standby within a few minutes, just like every other time when airliners stray off course. But of course on 9/11 this didn't happen, not even close. Somehow these "hijackers" must have used magical powers to cause NORAD to stand down, as ridiculous as this sounds because total inaction from the most high-tech and professional Air Force in the world would be necessary to carry out their tasks. So on the most important day in its history the Air Force was totally worthless. Then they had to make one of the airliners look like a smaller plane, because unknown to them the Naudet brothers had a videocamera to capture the only known footage of the North Tower crash, and this footage shows something that is not at all like a jumbo jet, but didn't have to bother with the South Tower jet disguising itself because that was the one we were "supposed to see". Anyway, as for the Pentagon they had to have Hani Hanjour fly his airliner like it was a fighter plane, making a high G-force corkscrew turn that no real airliner can do, in making its descent to strike the Pentagon. But these "hijackers" wanted to make sure Rumsfeld survived so they went out of their way to hit the farthest point in the building from where Rumsfeld and the top brass are located. And this worked out rather well for the military personnel in the Pentagon, since the side that was hit was the part that was under renovation at the time with few military personnel present compared to construction workers. Still more fortuitous for the Pentagon, the side that was hit had just before 9/11 been structurally reinforced to prevent a large fire there from spreading elsewhere in the building. Awful nice of them to pick that part to hit, huh? Then the airliner vaporized itself into nothing but tiny unidentifiable pieces no bigger than a fist, unlike the crash of a real airliner when you will be able to see at least some identifiable parts, like crumpled wings, broken tail section etc. Why, Hani Hanjour the terrible pilot flew that airliner so good that even though he hit the Pentagon on the ground floor the engines didn't even drag the ground!! Imagine that!! Though the airliner vaporized itself on impact it only made a tiny 16 foot hole in the building. Amazing. Meanwhile, though the planes hitting the Twin Towers caused fires small enough for the firefighters to be heard on their radios saying "We just need 2 hoses and we can knock this fire down" attesting to the small size of it, somehow they must have used magical powers from beyond the grave to make this morph into a raging inferno capable of making the steel on all forty-seven main support columns (not to mention the over 100 smaller support columns) soften and buckle, then all fail at once. Hmmm. Then still more magic was used to make the building totally defy physics as well as common sense in having the uppermost floors pass through the remainder of the building as quickly, meaning as effortlessly, as falling through air, a feat that without magic could only be done with explosives. Then exactly 30 minutes later the North Tower collapses in precisely the same freefall physics-defying manner. Incredible. Not to mention the fact that both collapsed at a uniform rate too, not slowing down, which also defies physics because as the uppermost floors crash into and through each successive floor beneath them they would shed more and more energy each time, thus slowing itself down. Common sense tells you this is not possible without either the hijackers' magical powers or explosives. To emphasize their telekinetic prowess, later in the day they made a third building, WTC # 7, collapse also at freefall rate though no plane or any major debris hit it. Amazing guys these magical hijackers. But we know it had to be "Muslim hijackers" the conspiracy theorist will tell you because (now don't laugh) one of their passports was "found" a couple days later near Ground Zero, miraculously "surviving" the fire that we were told incinerated planes, passengers and black boxes, and also "survived" the collapse of the building it was in. When common sense tells you if that were true then they should start making buildings and airliners out of heavy paper and plastic so as to be "indestructable" like that magic passport. The hijackers even used their magical powers to bring at least seven of their number back to life, to appear at american embassies outraged at being blamed for 9/11!! BBC reported on that and it is still online. Nevertheless, they also used magical powers to make the american government look like it was covering something up in the aftermath of this, what with the hasty removal of the steel debris and having it driven to ports in trucks with GPS locators on them, to be shipped overseas to China and India to be melted down. When common sense again tells you that this is paradoxical in that if the steel was so unimportant that they didn't bother saving some for analysis but so important as to require GPS locators on the trucks with one driver losing his job because he stopped to get lunch. Hmmmm. Further making themselves look guilty, the Bush administration steadfastly refused for over a year to allow a commission to investigate 9/11 to even be formed, only agreeing to it on the conditions that they get to dictate its scope, meaning it was based on the false pretense of the "official story" being true with no other alternatives allowed to be considered, handpicked all its members making sure the ones picked had vested interests in the truth remaining buried, and with Bush and Cheney only "testifying" together, only for an hour, behind closed doors, with their attorneys present and with their "testimonies" not being recorded by tape or even written down in notes. Yes, this whole story smacks of the utmost idiocy and fantastic far-fetched lying, but it is amazingly enough what some people believe. Even now, five years later, the provably false fairy tale of the "nineteen hijackers" is heard repeated again and again, and is accepted without question by so many Americans. Which is itself a testament to the innate psychological cowardice of the American sheeple, i mean people, and their abject willingness to believe something, ANYTHING, no matter how ridiculous in order to avoid facing a scary uncomfortable truth. Time to wake up America.
